Avro Arrow CF-105 Mk.1 Tee Shirt

  • by

The Avro Arrow CF-105 was a delta-winged interceptor aircraft designed and built in Canada in the 1950s. It was state of the art at the time and its designers believed it held the promise to reach Mach 2 speeds at altitudes exceeding 50,000 feet (15,000 m). It was planned to be the main RCAF interceptor into the 1960s. The first Arrow (the Mk.1, as is featured in this tee shirt design) was revealed to the public on October 4th, 1957. Flight testing began soon afterward. The Mk.2 was also later introduced as was the Iroquois engine.

On February 20th, 1959, Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker suddenly cancelled the Arrow and Iroquois engine programs. This was unexpected and highly controversial at the time. Only two months later, the assembly line, tooling, plans and existing airframes and engines were ordered destroyed. It is still an event of political and industry debate. The closing of the Arrow led to an exodus of many top Canadian engineers and production specialists, many of whom went on to work for NASA and other places around the world.
