Alan Turing (1912 – 1954) was an English mathematician, cryptologist, and pioneer of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. He was instrumental in breaking the German Enigma code during World War 2, leading to Allied victory over Nazi Germany.
Turing developed a complex code-breaking system called ‘Turingery’ which was instrumental in decoding secret German messages during the war. He also created a secure voice communication system he called ‘Delilah’, which encoded and decoded voice communications.
In 1952, he was charged with gross indecency because he was involved in a homosexual relationship. He avoided prison by agreeing to be chemically castrated. Turing’s security clearance was then revoked and he was barred from working for the government. On June 7th, 1954, Alan Turing was found dead due to cyanide poisoning. It was ruled a suicide at the time, but this has since been contested.
His legacy includes the prestigious Turing Award, awarded annually in computer science, and credit for ending the war almost two years early – saving many lives in the process. The Alan Turing Institute was founded in 2015. It is a national centre for research in AI and data science.
