In ancient Egyptian religion, the scarab, in the form of the dung beetle (Scarabaeus sacer), was an important symbol. This beetle rolls dung across the ground to make a ball and then lays its eggs in it. This act of rolling dung across the horizon and laying eggs in it which later hatched and gave life to new beetles, led the ancient Egyptians to associate it with the divine manifestation of the morning sun. Kephri, whose name was written with the scarab hieroglyph, was believed to roll the disk of the morning sun over the eastern horizon at dawn (hence, the connection with the action of the beetle).
The scarab was a very important and common symbol in ancient egypt and refers variously to manifestation, existence, growth, development, and effectiveness. It was one of the most widely used forms for amulets throughout all periods of ancient Egyptian history.
