Censorship has been around for a long time. Some works are deemed too overtly sexual or violent, some are feared because they are seen as being too revolutionary in their ideas and their inherent challenge to the status quo. All of these works are targets for being banned.
The act of banning a book should raise some important questions: Who is scared or challenged by the message? Why do they feel this way? Is banning the work the right thing to do? Why or why not? What limits, if any, should be placed on free speech any why? Who gets to censor or ban books and are they the right people or groups to do it? If not, who should decide these things? These are all important questions.
This design features some of the most banned writers of all time as well as authors who have had one or more of their well-known books banned. These writers include: Nadine Gordimer, Judy Blume, George Orwell, Gustave Flaubert, Harper Lee, D.H. Lawrence, Toni Morrison, Vladimir Nabokov, Maurice Sendak, J.K. Rowling, Salman Rushdie, Kurt Vonnegut, Jack London, Allen Ginsberg, Mark Twain, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, R.L. Stine, and Chris Crutcher.
Should their work be banned? If so, why? In not, why not? Please feel free to post a comment below and share or tag this post with a friend who would appreciate it.
