The binary number system originated in the 17th century
with the German philosopher and mathematician, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who
is also credited with discovering Calculus along with Isaac Newton.
Numbers related to binary numbers have also appeared
earlier in other cultures including ancient Egypt, China, and India. Leibniz
was specifically inspired by the Chinese and published a paper on the binary
number system entitled “Explanation of Binary Arithmetic” in 1703.
A binary number is composed of binary digits called
‘bits’ and a collection of eight bits is known as a byte, with four bits
referred to as a nibble. Any number can be represented by a series of binary
digits being set to either 1 or 0 (zero). The decimal number system is to the
base ten and the binary system is to the base two. The binary table on the
t-shirt shows you how to calculate the values of numbers in binary from left to
right.
