The Coso Pictographs are a collection of prehistoric rock art depicting animals, abstract symbols and anthropomorphic figures. Over 35,000 petroglyphs are formally documented. They estimate that over 100,000 petroglyphs exist in the Coso Range, making it the highest concentration of rock art in North America. While most of the carvings are 2,000 and 3,000 years old, experts estimate some of the Coso pictographs art to be over 10,000 years old.
These three incredible images represent shamans.
A shaman gains powers by entering a trance-like state. Whilst shamans’ abilities vary from culture to culture, they are typically thought to be able to heal the sick and to communicate with the otherworld, for instance. Additionally, they escort the souls of the dead to that otherworld. As a result, shamans are very important people indeed.
