The Death’s-Head Hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos) is, perhaps, best known for being referred to in The Silence of the Lambs. This particular species can be found in Europe and Africa. They are recognizable by the vaguely human skull-shaped markings on the thorax.
One interesting feature of the Death’s-Head Hawkmoth is that it can emit a loud chirping sound when it is irritated. Another amazing characteristic is that they can raid beehives undisturbed because they can mimic the scent of bees and not be recognized as intruders. This is one cool moth.
