The Death’s Head Hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos) is, perhaps, best known for being referred to in The Silence of the Lambs (starring Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster). This particular species can be found in Europe and Africa. They are recognizable by the vaguely human skull-shaped markings on the thorax.
One interesting feature of the Death’s Head Hawkmoth is that it can emit a loud chirping sound when it is irritated. Another amazing characteristic is that they can raid beehives undisturbed because they can mimic the scent of bees and not be recognized as intruders. The Death’s Head Hawkmoth is also the fastest moth in the world; it can fly up to 30 miles per hour (about 50 km/h). It can even hover in the air like a hummingbird while it drinks nectar.
This is one cool moth; worthy of adorning the front of any awesome shirt.
