Dr. Jane Hinton (1919 – 2003) was a key developer in the study of bacterial antibiotic resistance and one of the first two African-American women to earn the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1949. While first working as a laboratory technician at Harvard, she co-developed the Mueller-Hinton agar which is now regularly used to test bacterial susceptibility to antibiotics.
