“Wagara” refer to conventional Japanese patterns that hold specific meanings and were traditionally designed for adorning kimono and yakata, the traditional Japanese garments. These historical patterns trace back to the Heian period of Japan in the 8th century and are heavily influenced by nature. These patterns were crafted using techniques inspired by painting and Chinese calligraphy, and their purpose was to reflect different seasons and occasions.
Although new Wagara designs have emerged in recent times, several traditional designs are considered the original patterns. One of these is the Kikkō, composed of hexagon shapes resembling tortoiseshell and representing longevity. Samurai armor often featured small hexagons sewn together for the same reason. This pattern has numerous variations due to the ease of creating tessellations.
