Emily Roebling was the wife of Washington Roebling, head engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge. During construction, Washington suffered from decompression sickness after ascending too quickly from the bridge’s underwater caissons. The damaged caused by decompression sickness left Washington Roebling bed-ridden and Emily in charge of managing crews, politicians, and engineering calculations.
Based on her determination, Emily taught herself civil engineering principles while also appeasing government
officials so that her husband could remain head engineer in name. The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883, and Emily, as the powerhouse behind the project, was the first person to cross it.
