The Eye of Providence (or the all-seeing Eye of God) is a symbol that depicts an eye, generally enclosed in a triangle and surrounded by rays of light, meant to represent divine providence. The eye of God watches over humanity. A well-recognized example of the Eye of Providence appears on the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States, which is shown on the United States dollar bill.
The all-seeing Eye of God is now often associated with Freemasonry. It first first appeared as part of the standard Freemason iconography in 1797 in the publication, The Freemason’s Monitor.
In this context, the Eye represents the all-seeing Eye of God and serves as a reminder that humanity’s thoughts and deeds are always being watched by God (referred to in Masonry as the Great Architect of the Universe).
