“Frankie Say War! Hide Yourself” and “Frankie Say Relax” were popular slogan shirts in the eighties. Along with Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Wham! also popularized “Number One” and “Choose Life” slogans. The slogan shirt was amazingly popular in the 80s.
Cold War tensions were high. There was a prevalent fear that the world could be blown up with nuclear weapons if things went out of hand. There was international posturing between Reagan and Brezhnev. Most American buildings included nuclear fallout shelters (a fact which terrified me as a visiting Canadian). Sting sang “Russians” on his Dream of the Blue Turtles album. There was a global sense of fear.
The music was great, and the hair and the fashion seemed to snub its nose at the ever-present fear of impending doom. We got through it, yet the world is still threatened by war and environmental collapse. Slogans are here to stay. They are a powerful way to share a message and to vent one’s frustration at the same time.
I don’t get why we’re still killing each other. I don’t get why we waste so much money and human talent trying to be more efficient warmongers. I don’t get why Elon Musk buying or not buying Twitter is more important than the collapse of global bee populations or the bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef. It doesn’t make sense.
