The medieval period was the golden age of marginalia. Otherwise known as drolleries or grotesques, the artwork included in the margins of documents by scribes were meant to parody, satirize or to just be really bizarre. This funny face caricature would have had medieval readers falling out of their chairs in fits of uncontrollable laughter.
