Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaulti de Galilei or “Galileo” (15 February 1564 – 8 January 1642) is considered the father of modern science. He made major contributions to the fields of physics, astronomy, cosmology, mathematics and philosophy. Galileo has been called the “father of observational astronomy”, the “father of modern physics”, the “father of the scientific method”, and the “father of modern science”.
Galileo invented a much improved telescope that allowed him to see things that no other person had ever seen. He could, for example, observe and record observations about the moons of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, and a much more detailed view of the surface of the moon than had ever been seen before.
His advocacy of the heliocentric model of the universe got him into serious trouble with religious authorities who sentenced him to life imprisonment in 1633. It is reported that after being forced to recant his ‘heretical’ belief in the heliocentric model he muttered, “Eppur si muove!” (“Yet it exists!”). A simple and powerful statement that science is right whether you choose to believe it or not.
