George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950). He was an English novelist noted for his articulate prose, his social criticism, and his strong support for democratic socialism. He is best known for Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1948).
The adjective “Orwellian” describes totalitarian and authoritarian social systems. Many neologisms such as “Big Brother”, “Thought Police”, and “Newspeak” were also coined by Orwell.
