Hildegard von Bingen (1098 – 17 September 1179), also known as Saint Hildegard, was a German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, mystic, visionary, and polymath. She is one of the best-known composers of sacred monophony and is considered by many to be the founder of natural history in Germany.
Saint Hildegard wrote theological, botanical, and medicinal texts, as well as liturgical songs for women choirs to sing and poems. There are more surviving chants by Hildegard than by any other composer from the Middle Ages. She also created her own constructed language known as Lingua Ignota.
She was beatified on August 26th, 1326, by Pope John XXII and was canonized on May 10, 2012, by Pope Benedict XVI. She is one of only four women to be named a doctor of the Roman Catholic church and is considered by many as the patron saint of musicians and authors.
