Jane Goodall is a primatologist, anthropologist, and environmental activist. She is best known for her study of chimpanzees in Tanzania.
When she was young, Jane was given a stuffed chimpanzee named Jubilee. This toy sparked in her a lifelong love of animals, which has now brought her all around the world. When Jane was 26, she was invited by Louis Leakey to travel to Gombe Stream National Park, where she became the first person to observe chimpanzees in the wild.
Jane’s observations were ground-breaking in the scientific world. She discovered that many behaviours which had previously been considered “human behaviours” are shared by chimpanzees. These behaviours include rational thought, displays of physical affection such as hugging and tickling, systematic hunting, and even armed warfare. She also observed chimps constricting and using tools, which led Louis Leakey to say “now we must redefine tool, redefine man, or accept chimpanzees as human”.
Since her initial work, Jane has gone on to share the knowledge, understanding, and wonder she gained with the rest of the world through various forms of activism. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute, which has several purposes, ranging from protecting the chimpanzee population in Gombe, to inspiring the world’s youth to environmental awareness and activism through the Roots and Shoots program. She also travels the world, speaking about her experiences.
As a young person who is interested in learning about and protecting the world, I have personally been inspired by Jane Goodall for years. I used to have a biography about her which I read many times. In grade three, I did a presentation on Jane Goodall in which I dressed up as her and took a stuffed monkey to school. A few years later, I wrote a letter to her and received a reply, which I treasure to this day.
