This duvet cover features an original Japanese ensō symbol.
The ensō is a symbol of absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and mu (the void), characterized by a minimalist approach rooted in Japanese aesthetics. This symbol is created through the disciplined-creative practice of Japanese ink painting, known as sumi-e, using an ink brush and thin Japanese paper known as washi.
The circle of the ensō may be either open or closed, with each representing a different concept. An open circle allows for movement and development, embracing the imperfections of wabi-sabi, while a closed circle represents perfection, similar to Plato’s perfect form, and has been used for centuries in the construction of cosmological models.
Drawing an ensō is a spiritual practice that involves a single fluid stroke and reflects the character and context of its creator. This practice, known as hitsuzendō, is a means of self-realization and can be performed daily.
The ensō exemplifies various dimensions of the Japanese wabi-sabi perspective and aesthetic, including asymmetry, simplicity, weatheredness, naturalness, subtle grace, freedom, and tranquility.
