Dame Susan Jocelyn Bell Burnell (DBE FRS FRSE FRAS; born 15 July 1943) is an astrophysicist from Northern Ireland who discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967 as a postgraduate student. Pulsars are fast-moving neutron stars that actually emit radio signals. She was credited with “one of the most significant scientific achievements of the 20th century” by recording these signals. The discovery was acknowledged by the award of the 1974 Nobel Prize in Physics, but although she was the first to observe the pulsars, Bell was not one of the recipients of the prize.
Joy Division (the band which was later to become New Order) immortalized her first pulsar radio wave reception waveforms on cover of their album, “Unknown Pleasures”.
