Johannes Kepler (27 December 1571 – 15 November 1630) was a German astronomer, mathematician, and astrologer. He is best known for his laws of planetary motion, and his books Astronomia nova, Harmonices Mundi, and Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae.
He was a supporter of the Copernican model (heliocentric) planetary system when few others were. He proved and expanded upon this theory with his three laws of planetary motion: 1) the planets move in elliptical orbits with the sun at one focus; 2) the time necessary to traverse any arc of a planetary orbit is proportional to the area of the sector between the central body and that arc and; 3) there is an exact relationship between the squares of the planets’ periodic times and the cubes of the radii and their orbits. In this way, the universe could now be understood as a dynamic system, not a fixed one. This represented a monumental leap forward in our understanding of the universe.
This painting also features one of the most extraordinary ruff collars that I have ever seen, its enormous bulk orbiting ever so boldly around his brilliant mind.
