Lascaux Cave is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its Paleolithic cave paintings. The magnificent caves are located near the village of Montignac in France. The paintings are estimated to be over 17 300 years old. They consist primarily of images of large animals, many of which are known from fossil evidence to have lived in the area at the time. The cave was discovered on September 12, 1940, by four teenagers.
This shirt features one of the images from Lascaux; that of Megaloceros. It is an extinct genus of deer whose members lived throughout Eurasia from the early Pleistocene to the beginning of the Holocene and were important herbivores during the Ice Ages. What an amazing thing to have an eyewitness account of an extinct species from a time so long ago.
