Messier 81 (aka NGC 3031 or Bode’s Galaxy) is a grand design spiral galaxy about 12 million light-years from Earth. It is about half the size of the Milky Way galaxy and it is in the constellation Ursa Major. Messier 81 is a common target for astronomers due to its proximity to Earth, large size, relatively high brightness, and active galactic nucleus which contains a supermassive black hole. Far out!
