Muskellunge (Esox masquinongy), also known as muskelunge, mascalonge, milliganong (often referred to colloquially as “muskie” or “musky”) is a big, relatively uncommon freshwater fish native to northeastern North America. It is the largest member of the pike family.
The muskie has an oval body and duck-billed snout with very sharp teeth. The are recognizable for having dark marking on a light background, 6-10 pores on the underside of each lower jaw and the absence of scales from lower portions of cheeks and gill covers. They typically range between 71-137 centimetres (28-40 inches) in length and weight between 4-11 kilograms (8-23 pounds). The Ontario record is 29.5 kilograms (65 pounds).
The muskellunge is a prized sport fish and is known for its aerial acrobatics and hard fight.
