In Norse culture, Yggdrasil is the mighty ash tree whose trunk rises at the geographical center of the cosmos. It is also known as the Norse Tree of Life. The rest of that cosmos, including the Nine Worlds, is positioned around it and held together by its branches and roots. These branches and roots connect the various parts of the cosmos to one another. This interconnectedness means that the well-being of the cosmos depends on the well-being of Yggdrasil. Disruption of this delicate symbiosis, signals the arrival of Ragnarok, and the destruction of the universe.
The Tree of Life is also an important Celtic symbol as well (Crann Bethadh as Gaelige). It is possible that the Norse Vikings brought this symbol of Ireland when they invaded. In Celtic culture, the Tree of Life is an oak tree. As the oak trees were some of the largest and tallest trees in the forest, they often attracted lightning. This was seen by the Celts as a sign from the gods that the tree was special.
As the oak tree grows old and dies, its acorn seeds ensure new beginnings so the tree was seen as immortal. The Celts believed that trees were their ancestors in a reincarnated state.
