A little owl (Athene noctua) represents or accompanies Athena, the goddess of wisdom, in Greek mythology. The same little owl is also linked to Athena’s Roman incarnation, Minerva. As such, this special bird is often referred to as the “owl of Athena” or “the owl of Minerva”.
This symbol is inspired by an ancient Silver tetradrachm coin at the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon depicting the owl of Athena (circa 480–420 BC). The inscription “ΑΘΕ” is an abbreviation of ΑΘΗΝΑΙΩΝ, which can be translated as “of the Athenians”.
The owl has long been used as a symbol of knowledge, erudition, and wisdom throughout the Western world.
