These towers of cosmic dust and gas stand within the Eagle Nebula (M16). It is a birthplace for new stars, and many newborn stars lie hidden within its wispy columns. It is a truly striking celestial body.
The ingredients for star life are in abundance; blue represents oxygen, red represents sulphur, and green represents both nitrogen and hydrogen. Combine that with ultraviolet light and stars are born.
The Pillars of Creation are a relatively small feature (4 – 5 light years across) of the Eagle Nebula which spans 55 by 70 light years. The nebula is located about 7,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Serpens. You can view the Eagle Nebula through a small telescope and will have he best chance of spotting it in July.
