Rosalind Franklin is, perhaps, one of the
most underappreciated scientists of our time. She earned a Ph.D in physical
chemistry from Cambridge University. She learned X-ray diffraction and crystallography
in Paris in 1946. Franklin later applied these techniques to the study of DNA
fibers. One of her most famous photographs, featured on this shirt, provided
important insights into the structure of DNA. Crick and Watson used it as
evidence to support their DNA model the following year and took credit for the
discovery in a paper published in 1953. They went on to win the Nobel Prize in
1962 for this work. Rosalind Franklin died of ovarian cancer on April 16th,
1958, at the age of 37. Most of the recognition for her important scientific
contributions came posthumously.
