Eight Shadow Figures, by Utagawa Hiroshige, ca. 1842.
This wonderful image comes from the “New Edition of Shadow Making” series. It includes eight shadow figures (clockwise from upper right corner): a turtle on a rock, a man wearing a hat, a rabbit, a shachihoko (a creature from legend with the head of a dragon and the body of a dolphin), an owl, a fox, a snail and, a crow. Some of the images also include directions on how to make them move. There is something rather special about the enduring appeal of shadow figures or ‘puppets’.
