This beautiful comet image, named “Rosa”, comes from a 16th-century book on comets known as The Comet Book (or Kometenbuch in German). Its full title translates as “Comets and their General and Particular Meanings, According to Ptolomeé, Albumasar, Haly, Aliquind and other Astrologers”. As the name implies, its focus was on the meaning of comets from a folkloric perspective, rather than a scientific one. As such, comets were perceived as being strongly connected with disasters and were often anthropomorphized in art. This gorgeous artwork is a wonderful example of this.
