Triceratops, with its three horns, parrot-like beak, and large bony frill around the back of its head, is a striking dinosaur to behold. It lived in North America about 67 million to 65 million years ago, during the end of the Cretaceous Period. The name, triceratops, is a combination of the Greek syllables tri-, meaning “three,” kéras, meaning “Horn,” and ops, meaning “face.”
It was an herbivore, and may have lived mostly alone, in contrast to the herding tendency of many herbivores. Its horns and defensive frill may have made this possible.
In addition to providing defence against large predators like Tyrannosaurus rex, the distinctive horns and frill were also believed to play some role in mating rituals. Triceratops remains one of the most recognizable dinosaurs in history.
