Vitruvian Man is one of da Vinci’s best-known illustrations. In it, Leonardo uses both image and text to express the ideas of Vitruvius, a 1st-century Roman architect.
Vitruvius explored the idea of ideal proportions as they pertained to temple buildings. He believed that the measurements and proportions of the human body were perfect because they were divinely created. This became an important inspiration in both art and architecture during the Renaissance.
Da Vinci fits the human form perfectly, both within a circle and within a square as an example of this idea. His navel falls exactly in the centre of the circle. The text paraphrases Vitruvius’ theory.
