The Voynich Manuscript has been called the most mysterious book in the world. It is an illustrated codex hand-written in an unknown writing system. Even its very purpose and origin are undetermined.
It has been carbon dated to the early fifteenth century and may have been written in Italy during the Renaissance. The manuscript is named after a Polish book dealer who purchased it in 1912. It is currently held at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University.
Many cryptographers have tried to decipher the Voynich Manuscript over the years with no demonstrable success. Even British and American codebreakers from both World War I and World War II (including Alan Turing) were stumped. Its unknown script, meaning, and origin remain a mystery. A very enigmatic manuscript, indeed.
