George Orwell’s masterpiece, 1984, popularized these three slogans: “War is Peace”, “Freedom is Slavery”, and “Ignorance is Strength”.
“War is Peace” describes how a continual state of war is used by the Party to oppress and control the population. The slogan “Freedom is Slavery” signifies that individualism and autonomy result in slavery and persecution. The third slogan, “Ignorance is Strength”, denotes how the Party maintains control over an ignorant, simple population.
