A plague doctor was a physician who treated victims of the bubonic plague. During outbreaks, they were often hired by towns where that plague was a problem. Being hired by the town, they treated everyone: both the wealthy and the poor and everyone in between. They treated patients without prejudice.
These plague doctors wore some of creepiest outfits of all time. They wore an elongated beak-shaped nose which was designed to protect them from becoming infected by infusing their inhalations with strong scents and increasing the distance between their faces and the disease. The cloak and gloves were also meant to form a barrier. Eerily reminiscent of the current COVID-19 outbreak and all of the face mask and glove wearing which is going on right now during this pandemic.
